Though some countries might not have Internet, text messages, radio, television, simple door-to-door knocking would help. It’s the government’s responsibility to set up these types of systems. What if text messages were sent out in bulk? What if millions of people got a message from a telecenter explaining the situation and know a bouts of the Tsunami? This system could have saved millions of lives. If villagers were equipped with cell phones, calls and text messages could have been sent to virtually almost everyone in the area. If more villages in South Asia had some kind of telecenter would there have been more people on the know a bout’s of the Tsunami? If family members and friends heard of the Tsunami would the word spread to everyone in time? This is what we should think about next time we hear, bridging the digital divide. No one died because of the chain reaction of communication. He was able to tell family and friends, who spread the word themselves. Vijaykumar heard about the Tsunami well before anyone else did in the area. Vijaykumar, a volunteer at a telecenter in India lives could have been saved. If only a few more people in South Asia knew about the Tsunami, a lot less people would have died. If more people in South Asia had the technology to communicate with each other and others far away maybe they would have passed the word about the Tsunami. If we bridged the divide, the world would be different and maybe million of people wouldn’t be dead. A catastrophic event like this makes us think if things could be different if the digital divide wasn’t as divided as it is now. Living in America makes it hard to even comprehend how awful things must be in South Asia. The Tsunami has impacted not only the people of South Asia but also everyone around the world.

The Tsunami as a Wake-Up to Bridging the Digital Divide How is that possible? Amazing how this can happen. Billions of dollars lost and we never found the culprit. Nimda, the Internet virus, caused billions of dollars worth of damage, and the perpetrator isn’t known. They can hack into the digital controls of the computer that run these structures, giving them immense power. They have the power to control physical infrastructure’s in America. These programmers in themselves become weapons of mass destruction. When you can control servers, even ATM’s across an extended area, you take major control. This made me realize how much power these programmers holster. 3000 servers went down, ATM’s didn’t work, and emergency calls didn’t work. I was interested when I heard about the Internet going down. The point is what I got out of the video. I found myself listening more than watching. It was easy to look at my own computer and continue my own work. I’ll admit having our screens was distracting too. The audio was fine but the video kept freezing, displaying very slowly, frame by frame at times. First off, the video kept failing, which made it very hard to watch.
